Chapter twenty-five

Sephina

Aurel’s crushing weight was the only thing that kept me from jumping out of my skin. My body wouldn’t allow his to leave mine, and I was grateful he didn’t.

That whole ordeal had been horrifying. Those monsters from the alley came to cut off my arm. They’d said it was my fault that they’d lost theirs, and that their friend had lost his life.

Reminding them it wasn’t my fault, and that I didn’t ask for that to happen didn’t do me any favors. They were convinced. The bull man who’d pinned down my legs taunted me, saying I would probably fight less once they got their payback, and we could still have the fun they’d intended before.

I’d screamed for Aurel, but they’d laughed at me. Their cackles sent shivers of warning down my spine, as if they knew my screams wouldn’t do any good. Despite each of them only having one hand, their strength overpowered me, no matter how much I fought. They’d crammed fabric in my mouth after I’d shouted, and hot tears streamed down my cheeks as reality crashed over me that I couldn’t do anything to stop them.

Whatever cloth clogged my mouth held a salty, musty flavor, but the terror coursing through my veins didn’t allow me to care. Everything in me screamed, scrambling desperately to avoid their threats. But their painful holds on me restricted my movement, despite my thrashing.

Then, like the flip of a switch, my legs were released. The other freed my arm, and my brain couldn’t process fast enough to understand why. All I could do was retreat, but unfortunately, it still left me cornered.

That’s when I saw Aurel standing there. My mind couldn’t comprehend what to feel or how to react. Shock consumed me. Was I having a vision? Disassociating from reality, imagining something that wasn’t really there? Being cradled in his arms didn’t even register the entire way to his room, only when he went to pull away.

His body had become my anchor, the only thing I could grasp onto. And he’d stayed like this all night, splayed over top of me. He’d put me on his side of the bed, something I didn’t notice until morning light streamed through the cracks in the curtains.

Whatever had transpired between us before dissipated. I didn’t hold anger or resentment anymore because in my biggest moment of need, he’d come through for me. Everything that ached from his abandonment had been shelved, paling in comparison.

I reveled in the strength of his body, the way his muscles sunk into my flesh and how his heat permeated my skin. I felt content. Content that even if romantically he’d moved on, he still cared and valued me and my protection. I could work with that.

He shifted, lifting his head gently to look over me.

“You’re awake.” His raspy early morning voice crackled, the vibrations of it flowing into my chest.

“Mhm.” I nodded, flashing a smile of gratitude.

“Sephina, I’m so sorry about what happened.”

I thought I picked up
